The search committee creates evaluation criteria, conducts interviews, contacts references, and evaluates the candidates for the position to be filled.
The search committee should focus on research goals and teaching needs of the department, how the candidate could collaborate with existing faculty, and the qualities needed for a "fit" with the department & U.Va
In the evaluation process, it is vital to eliminate any stereotypical ideas based on an applicant’s race, religion, color, sex, age, national origin or ancestry, marital status, parental status, sexual orientation, disability, or status as a veteran.
Women faculty candidates want to be evaluated for academic positions on the basis of their scholarly credentials. They will not appreciate subtle or overt indications that they are being valued for other characteristics, such as their gender. It is important that contacts with women for faculty positions focus on their scholarship, qualifications, and potential academic role in the department.
